Farkle Strategy & Tips
A practical Farkle strategy guide: the odds of busting on every dice count, when to bank, how to treat hot dice, and how to play the final round when you are behind.
Play FarkleThe core idea
Dice count is risk
Farkle looks like pure luck, but the choice to roll or bank is maths. The table below shows how often a roll scores nothing for each number of dice. Pair it with the points you would lose and the decision usually makes itself.
| Dice rolled | Farkle chance | Rule of thumb |
|---|---|---|
| 6 | ≈ 2% | Almost always safe to roll. |
| 5 | ≈ 8% | Roll unless you are already holding a large score. |
| 4 | ≈ 16% | Still favourable with a modest turn total. |
| 3 | ≈ 28% | Consider banking around 300–400 points. |
| 2 | ≈ 44% | Bank almost anything you are holding. |
| 1 | ≈ 67% | A one-die roll fails two times in three. |
- 01
Know the cost of every roll
The chance of a Farkle depends only on how many dice you roll. Six dice bust about 2% of the time; one die busts two times in three. Every decision in Farkle is that number weighed against the points you are holding.
- 02
Roll on with four or more dice
With four, five, or six dice left, the risk of losing a modest turn total is small and the chance of adding points or triggering hot dice is large. Roll unless you are holding well over 1,000.
- 03
Bank when the dice run low
A rule of thumb that matches the odds: with three dice bank around 400, with two dice bank around 300, and with one die bank almost anything. Points in your bank can never be farkled away.
- 04
Keep fewer dice when you can
If a roll gives you a lone 1 or 5 alongside another 5, consider setting aside just the 1 and rolling five dice. Each extra die you lock costs you a die on the next roll, and that raises the Farkle risk far more than 50 points is worth.
- 05
Always take hot dice
When all six dice have scored you roll six fresh dice — a 2% chance of busting with your turn points already safe in hand. Banking a hot-dice turn early is nearly always giving up points.
- 06
Take more risk to get on the board
Until you have banked once, you need 500 in a single turn. Do not settle for a 300-point turn with three dice left — you cannot bank it anyway. Keep rolling.
- 07
Play the score, not the rule of thumb
In the final round the only thing that matters is beating the leader. If you need 1,800 to win, a safe 600-point bank loses the game. Keep rolling until your total passes theirs, then bank.
Common mistakes
Where turns go wrong
Locking every scoring die
Keeping two 5s on a roll with a 1 leaves you three dice instead of four. Sometimes the small extra 50 points is not worth the jump in Farkle risk. Ask what each die you set aside costs you next roll.
Banking too early with many dice
Cashing in 350 with five dice left throws away a roll that busts about one time in twelve. Rolling on is usually the higher-value play until your dice count drops.
Chasing losses with one die
Rolling a single die to squeeze out 100 more points fails two times in three. The turn total you would lose is almost always bigger than what you would win.
Ignoring the score you need
Banking rules are averages. When the opponent has already passed 10,000, a safe 400-point bank loses the game — you must gamble for a total that beats them.
